Dr. P.K. Iyengar Passes Away - Messages

Dr. P.K. Iyengar, one of Agastya Foundation's Founder Trustees and leading lights passed away in Mumbai yesterday. Dr. Iyengar helped conceive Agastya's mission and vision and played a critical role in guiding its development. All at Agastya will deeply miss his creative ideas, brillaint counsel and warm presence.

...............

He introduced me and my colleagues at Agastya to new and radical ways of thinking about India's social and economic challenges. He was bold and courageous and prepared to support his views at the national level against the odds.

Ramji Raghavan.

I saw this in the paper and felt depressed all day. One of the first articles in DH on creative thinking was coauthored by him, Ramji and me - that is still there on Agastya's website and pops up on google too. Such an intelligent and innovative person will surely be missed by all those who knew him.

While one is sorry to hear of his passing away, it is great to hear of his role in your great initiative. I also had the pleasure and privilege of interacting with him briefly in the context of deliberations of a committee that he headed for the purpose of arriving at a reasonable way of pricing nuclear power.

I daresay that his passing away will leave a vacuum in the mentoring which AIF would have received, from time to time. At the same time, the team of AIF will need to build on his contributions and enable the dream to be realised. My condolence to you and to AIF.

It was only through the Agastya Foundation that I had the distinct pleasure and honor of meeting Dr. Iyenger. Graceful in the face of controversy yet fierce in rhetoric. His contributions to the nation will be remembered for generations. I fondly remember and will forever cherish the time we had dinner together and he was sitting directly opposite me. Like a teacher to a student, he patiently explained that back in the 60’s with Homi Bhabha how India needed (and must) become an independent force technologically and how he and the other great leaders of our nation devised its own semiconductor mission. He said that he would pen his memoirs for everyone to truly understand what transpired after that but alas he has left us before sharing the treasures of his illustrious past. Our sincere condolences go out to the family of Dr. Iyengar. May his great soul rest in peace.

I vividly recall the clarity of thought and vision he had about Agastya's future when I met him along with you a couple of years ago. While his passing away will leave a void that will be hard to fill I am certain that his scientific ideas and farsighted vision will continue to form the bedrock for Agastya's future activities.
