IRIS - Feedback on Agastya's Participation

Eleven Agastya science projects have made it to the 2011 IRIS-Intel National Science Fair Competition finals to be held in Chandigarh in November. The Agastya finalists are from Kuppam (4), Hubli (5) and other N. Karnataka (2). 104 projects were selected nationwide by IRIS-Intel from a total of 1000 + projects. Over 10% of the finalists are from Agastya.

Following are some remarks made by our well-wishers in response to these results:

This is terribly exciting. I plan to talk about your program and the untapped potential of rural children and need for initiatives like yours to make this the next national asset. Again, congrats. India is lucky to have people like you making this level of difference.

It is a great achievement to be able to encourage so many students to ask questions and transform them into useful projects. I wish the students all success.

Congratulations. It’s a delight to read but not at all surprising. It demonstrates that the traditional base for nurturing talent in the country is highly skewed and keeps away large sections of our population. Given a chance and good mentoring the underprivileged and marginalized can prove their mettle and compete with the best. My best wishes to all the noble souls working for Agastya.
Arvind Gupta (IUCAA), Inter-University Centre for Astronomy & Astrophysics, Pune University
