Case Study - Dropout Student

Name of the Student: G. Sathish (Dropout class VIII)
Father's Name: Bengalurappa
Occupation: Tea Stall (Business)
Now passed: Class X (First Division) (Marks: 362/600) (2009/2010)

Siblings: Two brothers, elder brother Anand & younger brother Ramesh. Anand is currently studying his B.Ed - Teacher Training and younger brother Ramesh is physically handicapped.

Family background: Sathish's father studied upto standard 3rd and his mother is uneducated. His family is very poor, they run a tea shop at Gudupalli cross. They have only 0.50 cent land. The Tea Shop is their sole source of income.

Motivation:  Agastya voluntaries Mr. Mallesh, Mr. Amrish and Mr. Suresh requested his parents to send Sathish to school but his parents did not wish to because his elder brother is studying and his younger brother is handicapped so they were not able to meet the required expenses. His father told that his son Sathish studied up to std 8th and he discontinued studies last year in-order to help him at the tea shop.

Later on our dropout in-charge persuaded his father to let him attend night dropout classes after his work in the tea shop. At the Agastya Kodathanapalli dropout centre, basics and fundamental training was given to Sathish and in-turn on gaining confidence, he joined ZPHS, Kodathanapalli to complete his class 10th with his fathers approval.

Help of the Agastya: Agastya provided him with note books and paid his school fees amounting to Rs. 775/- to the school authorities. Our volunteers regularly taught him Mathematics, Science, English and other fundamentals. He visited the Agastya campus and learnt many experiments. Along side attending school on a regular basis, Sathish also attended the evening classes at the Dropout Centre to clear his doubts. At the end of it all he passed his 10th standard with first class results.

School Teacher opinion: Agastya  dropout volunteers visited his school on a regular basis and this was something the school teachers and authorities appreciated immensely.

Villagers: The village community are very happy about the dropout community centre and realize its benefits for their children.
