India’s financial literacy rates lag far behind those of developed nations like the UK, Canada, the U.S., and Germany. Shockingly, only 27% of Indian adults and just 16.7% of school-going students understand basic personal finance, according to SEBI. One major reason is the lack of structured financial education in schools especially for children from low-income communities. Without these essential life skills, generations remain trapped in poverty, unable to make informed choices about saving, spending, or investing. The urgency is clear: we must empower our children with the financial knowledge they need to thrive. How Will This Project Solve the Problem? Agastya International Foundation is on a mission to close this critical gap. Our program brings financial literacy directly into classrooms by integrating it with math education for students in grades 6 to 9 in government schools. Using our proven hands-on, experiential teaching methods, we make complex financial topics like budgeting, interest, digital payments, and banking easy to understand and apply. We also train schoolteachers, involve local educators, and actively engage with parents and communities to support children’s education and reduce dropout rates. Peer learning, interactive workshops, and community camps make financial learning fun, relevant, and rooted in real life. We’re not just teaching numbers we’re building confidence, creativity, and the foundation for lifelong financial independence. Potential Long-Term Impact By reaching thousands of students annually, the program contributes to building a more inclusive and economically resilient society. Agastya’s Financial Literacy program will be that catalyst creating a generation of young individuals who are not only curious and creative, but also financially aware and responsible. With interactive sessions, community engagement, and dedicated mentorship, we aim to break the cycle of poverty and empower students to shape a more secure and equitable future.
